Punk Chic

Tired. Close to end of year. But here is a snippety bit of the third novel I am being slavish over right now- this is a work in progress piece, but it sums the character up and she is getting ready for a Christmas jaunt. This is the 'before' of the writing: might post the 'after' next year!

Lilith wakes up in a cold bath.  She has no time to wash her hair now so she degreases her self-cut bleach mop with some glittery talc, which spills all over her body.  She peels on her short red dress, discovers all her tights are in the wash, she finds some red satin trousers.  There isn’t much time for make-up either so she draws on some red lipstick and splodges on more glitter.

‘Punk chic,’ she tells the mirror, as though it is questioning her outfit.

  1. The phone rings. "Just what I need, something else to hold me up" she complains to the mirror. It doesn't call a response after her as she tears down the hallway, water, glitter and talc leaving a trail in her wake. The phone's shrill screeching stops just as she reaches the phone. "Bugger!" she yells at the phone, which offers no defence.

It takes a moment for her to recognise the quiet tune she hears next as the Crazy Frog ringtone from her mobile, buried in her handbag, which is still on the bathroom floor. Knowing it is most likely to be the same person who just abandoned the landline call, Lilith opts not to make the dash back to the bathroom, knowing it will have cut to voicemail before she gets there. Instead she picks up the bedroom phone and dials 1471.

  2. The brief conversation with the mirror is interrupted by the shrill tones of the bedroom phone. "Damn it. Another hold-up" she complains to the mirror and dashes off down the hall, a trail of water, glitter and talc in her wake.

  3. Crazy Frog, Gerry?! But thanks for joining in and I'm liking the spirit of fun :-)

  4. Lilith seemed like the type of character who would have that as a ringtone. Hey, don't blame me - you created her!

    Right then, who's next?

  5. I did create her a bit... but there is a very real person that this character is based on and a real life story- which I foolishly thought would be easier to write- no plot dilemmas.. hmm... I know better now. Anyway, it's all part of the Great Learning Curve.
Next is... have you written your office experiences into short stories? They ooze modern frustration: very publishable stuff!
    :-)
